Hey guys, if you're from socal, can you please tell me about your smogging experiences and specifically which shops are more receptive to modded cars. I just came back from 4 shops that rejected me after I told them the car was modded. The first place told me some BS about how CARB E.O.#'s don't even matter now, and that as long as the modification was there, they couldn't smog the car, but I'm pretty sure they're just messing with me. On the other hand, has anyone heard of this new law being passed here in CA, the shop told me it went into effect 4 months ago. All the other shops just told me their policy is to not smog modified cars, and I was like wth!!!! Isn't this some sort of discrimination??? Anywayz, peeps in cali, gimme some feedback if you can, I'm driving around with my stock header and bypass valve zip tied, car is not running too well. Thanks.

Go to the smog shop across the street from JR in Westminster. The chinese dude there will smog your car. Just make sure that you do a pre-test first.

On the other hand, my car would not pass with 8 psi, bypass valve zip tied shut, etc.

Hey Richard, what do you mean by a pretest? If all else fails, I'll just take out my fuel pump and zip tie the bypass, that way, it should run basically the same as a NA GSR. Anyone from socal got any other ideas? Thanks.

Smog inspectors love pictures of dead presidents. biggrin

I've never heard of this new law you speak of. Aftermarket parts are legal if they have an exemption number which all CARB approved parts do. Don't call around. Go to some gas station that has smog facilities. Those guys are usually pretty shady and will pass you if you give them what they want. *wink wink* Chances are your car will pass if you have the stock pump, 6psi, stock header. Make sure you take the car on the freeway for a little while before you go.

I just got my GSR smogged without problems in northern California. Had to try three times. The first two shops gave lame excuses about JR superchargers were not carb certified because it wasn't in their smog book (which was printed in 1996). Yes, there are garages that are afraid to smogged modified cars. As long as you have the carb sticker for the charger, headers and have your cam gear reset back to factory, you should be fine. It is important to have the carb numbers for the addon parts visible and accessible. You don't need to zip up your bypass valve as it makes no difference anyways. There will no boost generated when revving at a constant speed of 2500 rpm. It's a good idea to get a tailpipe pre-test first. It is a good indicator whether the car will pass smog. Only cost $10 and five minutes.

Fortunately, there are numereous garages that is staffed by import car enthusiast that knows JR chargers are smog legal and is cool about aftermarket parts.

My GSR is supercharged running at 8psi, headers, cam gear, high flow fuel pump.

    Good luck!

If they're doing drive cycle testing you'll have trouble passing without lowering the fuel pressure to stock levels, as the tip in enrichment will be too great otherwise.
